From January 21 to February 5, 2018, 9 students and 1 teacher of GXNU went to Sydney to attend the 2018 “English and Translation Advanced Course” Winter Camp jointly sponsored by GXNU and Macquarie, to experience authentic Australian English class and rich Australian culture.

Macquarie is one of the most progressive universities in Australia, rated as 240th by QS World University Ranking, with its English language and literature major honorably ranked the 51st to 100th globally. This winter camp included theme-based English language lectures, English translation lectures and a series of cultural activities. The English language lectures were rich in content, covering listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, with an emphasis on students’ oral presentation skills, while closely related to Australian culture. These lectures were both instructive and fun, linking learning closely to life. English translation lectures focused on Australian interpreter market, specifically, the fields of community, court, and hospital interpreting, providing the students a brand-new research perspective and inspiring the students greatly.

The cultural activities were rich in content, appreciation of opera at Sydney Opera House, “Australian Day” at Darling Harbor and Parliament House and Australian War Memorial in Canberra. These activities made students experience by themselves the diverse and inclusive Australian culture, and also supplemented the in-school learning. The delegation also mounted Sydney Tower, and visited Paradise Country and Blue-ray Wormhole at Gold Coast and Art Gallery of New South Wales. The natural and human tourist sites jointly helped the delegation learn the true charm of Australia and promoted effectively students’ motivation of learning English.

These two weeks of English language and culture study helped students improve their language usage and also broaden their vision. After returning home, they would surely be more motivated to study harder. Organizing such short-term language and culture experience projects marks one of the main ways of GXNU in training internationalized talent, and is conducive to improved talent training and furthered internationalized education of GXNU.
