Recently, the top-tier journal in the field of medicinal chemistry, Journal of Medicinal Chemistry
(J. Med. Chem.), released rankings of the top ten academic/research institutions by the number of research articles published in 1993, 2003, 2013, and 2023, based on the affiliations of the authors. The published data reveals that in 2023, Chinese universities and research institutions dominated the top ten list, securing eight positions. Notably, Guangxi Normal University (GXNU) achieved a historic milestone by ranking eighth in 2023, marking its debut in the global top ten. This accomplishment establishes GXNU as another leading Chinese academic institution following elite organizations such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China Pharmaceutical University, signifying a quantum leap in the university's international influence in medicinal chemistry.
As a key comprehensive university in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, GXNU surpassed numerous renowned traditional universities in Europe and America, sharing the top ten positions with globally leading institutions such as the University of Michigan and the University of California. This achievement highlights the remarkable outcomes of its interdisciplinary Chemistry + Pharmacy collaboration. The breakthrough stems from the university's long-standing research orientation of aligning with national health strategies while leveraging regional resource advantages. By establishing the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Medicinal Resource Chemistry and Molecular Drug Engineering, forming cross-disciplinary innovation teams, and collaborating with ASEAN countries on joint research initiatives, the university has developed an innovation chain spanning fundamental research to technological transformation. This ranking reshapes the global academic community's perception of research capabilities at universities in western China and injects new momentum into Guangxi's vision of becoming an ASEAN-oriented biomedical innovation hub.
